About Us

Meet Our Founder

Hlengiwe Zulu is the founder of Uhuru Development Consulting, a consultancy that exists to empower Social Investors and Implementors with the skillset and knowledge to achieve optimal social impact through advisory, training and capacity building.

Prior to this, she was the Social Investment Product and Community Manager for the Nation Builder Trust, a Mergon Group initiative. Nation Builder inspires and equips the business community to lead social change in South Africa.

Hlengiwe uses her diverse range of management, leadership and technical skills and experience within community work, policy writing and the public sector, to act as a change agent in developing and implementing winning social impact strategies. Her desire is to set specific people, departments and the country at large on new social change trajectories.

Prior to joining the Mergon Group, Hlengiwe held positions with The Foschini Group, as well as McKinsey and Company. She completed her Master’s degree in Social Development and Policy at the University of Pretoria, with a focus on how education related CSI projects can both contribute to, and uphold human rights.

Hlengiwe is passionate about the potential of well-planned and collaborative social investment strategies and how these can further social justice. She has a particular interest in the African continent and the role that Africa can play in crafting its own, unique development journey.

She has facilitated over 180 sessions, working with over 140 business and NPO's, believing strongly in the beauty of holding space for others to hear one another, as well as together craft strategies and solutions that they could never have achieved in silo's.
